REDMOND LIBRARY

Project Description

This project is part of a large bond passed by Deschutes County voters to renovate the existing Deschutes Public Libraries and build two new libraries, one of them being the Redmond Library. The new, two-story library located in the heart of downtown Redmond replaces the existing community building on the same site. As a community hub for decades, the library pays an ode to the original space and the surrounding architecture through its brick-clad exterior, while displaying many modern features as well including mass timber.

The award-winning library offers several multi-purpose spaces, a Children’s Discovery Space, DIY/creative maker spaces for activities, and adult and teen collaborative areas catered to studying and co-working. Located in the building’s core is a “feature” staircase, fabricated by Max Manufacturing of Bend, and a breathtakingly large, custom sculpture designed by renowned local Pacific Northwest artist, John Grade that is influenced by Central Oregon sagebrush. Throughout the library, glue laminated columns and beams frame the interior, while exposed dowel-laminated timber (DLT) ceilings provide added warmth to the building. The team used a specific type of DLT called “acoustic dowel laminated timber” (ADLT), reducing the need for acoustical paneling while still providing structural integrity.
